Field sobriety tests have been used by law enforcement officers to identify alcohol-impaired drivers. Yet in 1981 Tharp, Burns, and Moskowitz found that 32% of individuals in a laboratory setting who were judged to have an alcohol level above the legal limit actually were below the level. In this study, two groups of seven law enforcement officers each viewed videotapes of 21 sober individuals performing a variety of field sobriety tests or normal-abilities tests, e.g., reciting one's address… Expand

Topics from this paper

Statistical evaluation of standardized field sobriety tests.
TLDR
It is indicated that the accuracy of the SFSTs depends on the BAC level and is much poorer than that indicated by Stuster and Burns and the means of evaluation must be significantly modified to represent the large degree of variability of BAC in relation to SFST test scores. Expand

TLDR
The history and development of the National Highway and Safety Administration’s Standardized Field Sobriety Tests are detailed, and it is concluded that the research that supports their use is limited, important confounding variables have not been thoroughly studied, reliability is mediocre, and their developers and prosecution-oriented publications have oversold the tests. Expand
Intervening to decrease the probability of alcohol-impaired driving: Impact of novel field sobriety tests
TLDR
Each of the sobriety tests performed better than chance at predicting participant intoxication, but the performance feedback did not enhance awareness of one’s risk to drive at a given BAC. Expand
The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) and measures of cognitive functioning.
TLDR
Variation in some aspects of cognitive performance was found to be moderately and positively correlated with some individual aspects of the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests; particularly among tasks which assess reaction time. Expand
Development of a Mobile Test Suite to Determine the Sobriety of Motorists
The project presented in this paper describes some aspects relating to the implementation and feasibility of a mobile phone based test suite that has the goal of helping police officers to determineExpand

TLDR
Smartphone intoxication sensing is found more accurate on the descending limb of the drinking episode and that intoxication detection on the normal walks of subjects were just as accurate as the SFSTs. Expand
Differential effects of ethanol on motor coordination in adolescent and adult rats
TLDR
Compared the impact of a range of ethanol doses on motor coordination in adolescent and adult rats, the results provide further evidence that adolescents and adults are differentially sensitive to the behavioral effects of ethanol. Expand
Chronic-intermittent ethanol exposure during adolescence prevents normal developmental changes in sensitivity to ethanol-induced motor impairments.
TLDR
The data suggest that CIE exposure during adolescence has a lasting impact on sensitivity to ethanol-induced motor impairments, which might stem from a disruption of normal developmental processes. Expand
