In this work fluctuations in the electric field of surface plasmon polaritons undergoing random scattering on a rough metallic surface are considered. A rigorous closed form analytic expression is derived describing second order correlations in the resulting plasmon speckle pattern assuming statistically stationary and isotropic roughness. Partially coherent planar Schell-model source fields can also be described within the developed framework. Behaviour of the three-dimensional degree of cross… Expand

Tracking Single Particles Using Surface Plasmon Leakage Radiation Speckle
Label free tracking of small bio-particles such as proteins or viruses is of great utility in the study of biological processes, however such experiments are frequently hindered by weak signalExpand
Role of multiple scattering in single particle perturbations in absorbing random media

Speckle correlation functions applied to surface plasmons
The optical intensity transmitted through a random pattern of subwavelength holes in a metal film exhibits a speckle pattern. We study the variation of this speckle pattern as a function ofExpand

Degree of polarization in near fields of thermal sources: effects of surface waves.
The concept of degree of polarization for electromagnetic near fields, based on the generalized Stokes parameters that appear as expansion coefficients of the 3 x 3 coherence matrix in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices, is introduced. Expand
Surface plasmon polariton scattering by a small particle placed near a metal surface: An analytical study
Scattering of light by a small particle placed near a metal surface is studied via analytical calculations of the particle extinction cross section. Considering a small spherical particle, we expressExpand
Spatial correlations in the near field of random media.
It is shown that the spatial correlations of optical fields in close proximity of highly scattering, randomly inhomogeneous media depend on this distance and, moreover, their extent can be significantly smaller than the wavelength. Expand
Leakage radiation microscopy of surface plasmon polaritons
We review the principle and methodology of leakage radiation microscopy (LRM) applied to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Therefore we first analyze in detail the electromagnetic theory of leakyExpand

Subwavelength spatial correlations in near-field speckle patterns
At subwavelength distance from the exit surface of a disordered medium, speckle patterns generated by multiple scattering of waves exhibit nonuniversal near-field correlations. A calculation of theExpand
