  • Fetal macrosomia and maternal diabetes are independent risk factors for shoulder dystocia, an obstetrical emergency that may cause permanent neonatal injury. Randomized trials of glycemic control in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes reveal decreased rates of macrosomia and shoulder dystocia among those treated.
