Abstract This investigation evaluated several mechanisms that might influence the acquisition of adult male dominance, in captive vervet monkeys. Ten established social groups were observed for a 12-week baseline and a 20-week experimental period. Each group contained three adult males, at least three adult females, and their immature offspring.
