Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a neglected disease manifestation of schistosomiasis. A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess in a schistosomiasis-endemic area the proportion of women affected by FGS of the lower reproductive tract and to compare the frequency of symptoms and signs possibly associated with FGS between women with proven FGS (n=134), endemic referents (n=225, women living in an endemic site), and referents (n=75, women living in a nonendemic site). Absence of cervical schistosomiasis among women from two areas of north–eastern Brazil with endemic Schistosoma mansoni
TLDR
The risk, among women, of genital manifestations of S. mansoni infection is small in areas where the parasite load in the population is low (as the result of interventions to control intestinal schistosomiasis).
Female Genital Schistosomiasis: A Neglected Tropical Disease Infecting Women of Reproductive Age in Endemic Areas
TLDR
The patho-physiological changes that occur, have not been fully investigated in women of reproductive age residing in schistosomiasis endemic areas, in the context of treatment alogrithms for administration of praziquantel in pregnant women, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
Female genital schistosomiasis and reproductive tract infections. A cross-sectional study in rural adolescents in South Africa
TLDR
The results show the importance of the inclusion of FGS in the management protocols for genital infections in areas endemic for urinary schistosomiasis, and highlight the importance for more research on suitable differential diagnostic tools and disease management.
Female genital schistosomiasis as an evidence of a neglected cause for reproductive ill-health: a retrospective histopathological study from Tanzania
TLDR
Genital schistosomiasis adds to the disease burden of women in all age groups and should be considered as differential diagnosis of cancer in endemic areas.
PREVALENCE AND HISTOPATHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SCHISTOSOMA HAEMATOBIUM ON THE FEMALE GENITAL TRACT IN SOHAG GOVERNORATE, UPPER EGYPT
TLDR
The prevalence and infection intensity of urogenital schistosomiasis and made a retrospective analysis of histopathological changes in female genital tract affected by S. haematobium among female patients attended Sohag University Hospitals, from October 2016 to September 2019 are determined.
The Colposcopic Atlas of Schistosomiasis in the Lower Female Genital Tract Based on Studies in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and South Africa
TLDR
This is the first atlas to present the clinical manifestations of schistosomiasis in the lower female genital tract and it could be used for training purposes, further research, and in clinical practice.
Presence of schistosomiasis in genital biopsies from patients at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia
TLDR
Uterine cervical schistosomiasis was the most prevalent form of female genital schistOSomiasis and mostly affected middle aged women, and indicates that genital schistsomiasis is common in Zambia.
Coexistence of urogenital schistosomiasis and sexually transmitted infection in women and men living in an area where Schistosoma haematobium is endemic.
TLDR
The rationale for empirical antischistosoma treatment of adolescents and younger adults in areas where S. haematobium is endemic, with praziquantel alone or in combination with existing anti-STI regimens, is discussed.
S. haematobium as a Common Cause of Genital Morbidity in Girls: A Cross-sectional Study of Children in South Africa
TLDR
Even before sexually active age, a relatively large proportion of the participating girls had similar genital symptoms to those reported for adult genital schistosomiasis previously, suggesting anti-schistosomal treatment should be considered at a young age in order to prevent chronic genital damage and secondary infections.

Schistosomiasis of the lower reproductive tract without egg excretion in urine.
TLDR
Since FGS frequently exists in women with scanty or no egg excretion in the urine and because this disease manifestation is a considerable individual and public health hazard in S. haematobium-endemic areas, mass treatment targeted to women of child-bearing age should be considered.
Clinical findings in female genital schistosomiasis in Madagascar
TLDR
This study indicates that S. haematobium infection in women may not only cause symptoms in the urinary tract, but also frequently in the lower and upper reproductive tract.
Female Genital Schistosomiasis as a Risk-Factor for the Transmission of HIV
TLDR
If female genital schistosomiasis is a risk factor for the spread of HIV like other genital ulcer diseases, there should be interesting ways to intervene from the public health point of view.
Female genital schistosomiasis. New challenges from a gender perspective.
TLDR
An example of how a gender perspective on a well-known parasitic disease can bring new challenges to the research community and the public health sector is given.
HIV and reproductive tract infections in a total village population in rural Kilimanjaro, Tanzania: women at increased risk.
TLDR
A significant association was found between HIV infection and STD cases (in women) and between HIV infections and a history of STDs (in men), and the heavy burden of untreated RTIs in females calls for a more gender-specific approach to HIV and STD prevention.
