Efficient use of feed resources is recognized to be an important component of livestock management. However, traditional feeding standards and systems are shown to have been an inconsistent and unreliable medium for applications of modern nutritional knowledge. Their continued use is admitted to be expedient but it is suggested that effort should be diverted from “patching up” these fundamentally unsatisfactory systems towards development of new ones.
