Abstract We studied the feeding behaviors of two sympatric species of caimans (Melanosuchus niger and Caiman crocodilus) during the dry season in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, Amazonas State, Brazil. Observations were made in 50 × 13 m plots located along the land-water interface. We investigated the influence of interspecific density and the effects of temperature and water depth on the feeding behaviors of both species. We identified three principal categories of feeding…
Nest attendance influences the diet of nesting female spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) in Central Amazonia, Brazil
Although nesting ecology is well studied in crocodilians, there is little information on the diet and feeding habits of nesting females. During the annual dry season (November–December) of 2012, we
Variation in diet of hatchlings, juveniles and sub-adults of Caiman crocodilus chiapasius in La Encrucijada, Chiapas, Mexico
TLDR
While the invertebrate intake decreased along different size classes, vertebrates intake increased, and that diet overlapped greater in adjacent size Classes, the data show that Caiman crocodilus chiapasius is protected by the Mexican law in the category of "special protection".

Diet, Gastric Parasitism, and Injuries of Caimans (Caiman, Melanosuchus, and Paleosuchus) in the Peruvian Amazon
TLDR
Novel squamate and fish species in the diet of Amazonian caimans and overall dietary findings consistent with that of other caiman diet literature are reported.
Conservation Genetics of New World Crocodilians
The chapter gives an introductory overview on the biology of the 11 species of crocodilians inhabiting the Americas. Geographical distribution is broadly discussed in the light of biogeographical and
Growth of Caiman crocodilus yacare in the Brazilian Pantanal
TLDR
Analyzing growth of the caiman in the Brazilian Pantanal found evidence of a small effect of rainfall, but not temperature, on short-term growth of small caimans, but most variation in growth rates was unexplained by variables other than age and sex.
Intraspecific variation in the skull morphology of the black caiman Melanosuchus niger (Alligatoridae, Caimaninae)
TLDR
A comparison with previous functional studies reveals that functional adaptations during ontogeny seem to be primarily restricted to the postrostral region, whereas rostral shape changes are more related to dietary shifts.
Opportunistic top predators partition food resources in a tropical freshwater ecosystem
TLDR
The results show that differences in crocodilian diets likely result from prey preferences and not only from habitat selection, and suggest that some species of crocodilians may be less generalist than traditionally thought and their influence on terrestrial or aquatic food webs might be species specific.
Sleeping site selection by golden-backed uacaris, Cacajao melanocephalus ouakary (Pitheciidae), in Amazonian flooded forests
TLDR
In Amazonian seasonally flooded forest (igapó), golden-backed uacaris, Cacajao melanocephalus ouakary, show high selectivity for sleeping trees, interpreted as maximising detection of both aerial and arboreal predators.

DIET OF THE SPECTACLED CAIMAN (CAIMAN CROCODILUS) IN THE CENTRAL VENEZUELAN LLANOS
TLDR
Between October 1984 and June 1989, a sample of 274 spectacled caiman was examined to study diet in the central Venezuelan lianos, and prey items found in the stomachs were divided into 10 categories and analyses based on prey frequency and mass were conducted.
Diets of Spectacled and Black Caiman in the Anavilhanas Archipelago, Central Amazonia, Brazil
Stomach contents were collected from 213 Caiman crocodilus with snout-vent lengths (SVL) between 15 cm and 115 cm, and 25 Melanosuchus niger with SVLs from 15 cm to 95 cm, in the Anavilhanas
Monitoring the Distribution, Abundance and Breeding Areas of Caiman crocodilus crocodilus and Melanosuchus niger in the Anavilhanas Archipelago, Central Amazonia, Brazil
TLDR
It is shown that surveying hatchling groups in the Anavilhanas Archipelago is more efficient than surveying for subadults and adults, which, by itself, can give false impressions about the suitability of areas for conservation of breeding populations of these species.
Diets of Amazonian Crocodilians
TLDR
There is an inverse relationship between the number of terrestrial invertebrates eaten and thenumber of fish eaten by different size classes of Caiman crocodilus, suggesting that mutually exclusive foraging modes are used for those prey categories.
HUMAN INFLUENCE ON THE WARINESS OF MELANOSUCHUS NIGER AND CAIMAN CROCODILUS IN CUYABENO, ECUADOR
TLDR
The findings indicate that observation and capture, even if harmless, affect the spatial distribution and wariness of crocodilian populations.
Reproductive Ecology of the Spectacled Caiman (Caiman crocodilus) in the Venezuelan Llanos
TLDR
In the Venezuelan llanos, the reproductive cycle of the spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) was constrained temporally by seasonal variation in water availability, and female reproductive output increased both in absolute and relative terms as females grew.
