Extreme events in the form of pulses of extraordinary intensity (sometimes also called optical rogue waves) are easily observed in the chaotic regime of an all-solid-state laser with a saturable absorber if the Fresnel number of the cavity is high. This result suggests that the nonlinear interaction among transverse modes is an essential ingredient in the formation of extreme events in this type of laser, but there is no theoretical description of the phenomenon yet. We report here a set of…

Numerical modeling of extreme events observed in the all-solid-state laser with a saturable absorber

Extreme events (pulses of high intensity) are observed to appear spontaneously in some chaotic regimes of the self-pulsing all-solid-state laser with a saturable absorber (diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 +

Extreme events and single-pulse spatial patterns observed in a self-pulsing all-solid-state laser.

A direct observation of the pulse-to-pulse evolution of the transverse pattern demonstrates that EEs follow a deterministic evolution, and that they can appear even in a system with few interacting modes.

Experimental demonstration of spatial rogue waves in the passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.

The observations show that spatial rogue waves are most likely to occur when the laser exhibits complex output beam configurations that are formed by a large number of interacting high-order transverse modes.

Alternation of Defects and Phase Turbulence Induces Extreme Events in an Extended Microcavity Laser

These regimes provide some insight into the poorly known properties of the complex spatiotemporal dynamics exhibited by secondary instabilities of an Andronov–Hopf bifurcation by revealing a chaotic alternation of phase and amplitude turbulence.

Spatiotemporal extreme events in spatially extended lasers

Chaos and extreme events in an azimuthally polarized Nd:GdVO4 laser with pump modulation.

Nonlinear dynamics and extreme events were explored in a spatially distributed polarization laser based on an azimuthally polarized Nd:GdVO4 laser with pump modulation when the modulation frequency approached the relaxation oscillation frequency, and spatiotemporal extreme events occurred.

Periodic and chaotic dynamics in a passively Q-switched Nd:GdVO4 laser with azimuthal polarization.

A period-doubling route to chaos was observed in a passively Q-switched Nd:GdVO4 laser beam with azimuthal polarization, the first report of spatiotemporal chaos under a stationary spatial distribution of the polarization.

Classification strategies in machine learning techniques predicting regime changes and durations in the Lorenz system.

This paper uses machine learning strategies aiming to predict chaotic time series obtained from the Lorenz system to demonstrate the ability of the classification technique to predict the regime duration of more than 11 oscillations, which corresponds to around 10 Lyapunov times.

Deterministic Optical Rogue Waves in Nd:YVO4 Lasers Induced by Near-Degenerate Transverse Modes

We identify the role of transverse modes in causing temporal instability in an all-solid-state laser system and thus propose a new method to trigger deterministic optical rogue waves. Experimental

Optical rogue waves in an all-solid-state laser with a saturable absorber: importance of the spatial effects

We report experimental and theoretical evidence of the existence of extreme value events (sometimes named “optical rogue waves”) in two types of lasers of widespread use, both belonging to the “laser

Extreme events in the Ti:sapphire laser.

Experimental and theoretical evidence of the existence of extreme value events in the form of scarce and randomly emerging giant pulses in the femtosecond of the Ti:sapphire laser implies that, in this laser, the extreme effects have a nontrivial dynamical origin.

Optical rogue waves

This work reports the observation of rogue waves in an optical system, based on a microstructured optical fibre, near the threshold of soliton-fission supercontinuum generation—a noise-sensitive nonlinear process in which extremely broadband radiation is generated from a narrowband input.

Instabilities, breathers and rogue waves in optics

Curious wave phenomena that occur in optical fibres due to the interplay of instability and nonlinear effects are reviewed. Optical rogue waves are rare, extreme fluctuations in the value of an

Spatiotemporal dynamics of lasers with a large fresnel number.

It is shown theoretically that the spatiotemporal dynamics of such a laser can be governed by two fields, which can explain why the intensity of the laser is locally chaotic but the time-averaged intensity pattern retains the global symmetry of the system.
