}The I locus in soybean (Glycine max) corresponds to a region of chalcone synthase (CHS) gene duplications affecting seed pigmentation. We sequenced and annotated BAC clone 104J7, which harbors a dominant i(i) allele from Glycine max 'Williams 82', to gain insight into the genetic structure of this multigenic region in addition to examining its flanking regions. The 103-kb BAC encompasses a gene-rich region with 11 putatively expressed genes. In addition to six copies of CHS, these genes include…

Structural Features of the Endogenous CHS Silencing and Target Loci in the Soybean Genome
- Biology
- 2008
The bacterial artificial chromosome library from the soybean cultivar Williams 82, harboring the silencing i i allele, was screened exhaustively for different members of the multigene CHS family, finding CHS7 and CHS8, the target transcripts for siRNA mediated gene silencing in the seed coats, were present as single copies on different chromosomes.
A 3,000-Loci Transcription Map of Chromosome 3B Unravels the Structural and Functional Features of Gene Islands in Hexaploid Wheat1[W]
- Biology, MedicinePlant Physiology
- 2011
Gene Ontology and expression profile analyses for the 3,000 genes located along the chromosome revealed that the gene islands are enriched significantly in genes sharing the same function or expression profile, thereby suggesting that genes in islands acquired shared regulation during evolution.
Structural features of GmIRCHS, candidate of the I gene inhibiting seed coat pigmentation in soybean: implications for inducing endogenous RNA silencing of chalcone synthase genes
- Biology, MedicinePlant Molecular Biology
- 2007
A candidate of the I gene is reported, GmIRCHS, which consists of a 5′-portion of a DnaJ-like gene containing a promoter region and a perfect inverted repeat (IR) of 1.1-kb truncated CHS3 sequences (5′-ΔCHS3 and 3′- ΔCHSS3).
Endogenous, Tissue-Specific Short Interfering RNAs Silence the Chalcone Synthase Gene Family in Glycine max Seed Coats[W][OA]
- BiologyThe Plant Cell Online
- 2009
Production of the trigger double-stranded RNA that initiates the process occurs in a specific tissue and represents an example of naturally occurring inhibition of a metabolic pathway by siRNAs in one tissue while allowing expression of the pathway and synthesis of valuable secondary metabolites in all other organs/tissues of the plant.
Characterizing Two Inter-specific Bin Maps for the Exploration of the QTLs/Genes that Confer Three Soybean Evolutionary Traits
- BiologyFront. Plant Sci.
- 2016
The results demonstrate that RAD-seq is a cost-effective approach for constructing high-density and high-quality bin maps that can be used to map QTLs/genes into such small enough regions that their candidate genes can be predicted.

- Biology, MedicineNature Communications
- 2019
A reference-grade wild soybean genome is reported and it is shown that it can be used to identify structural variation and refine quantitative trait loci and illustrate the power of this assembly in the analysis of large structural variations in soybean germplasm collections.

It is demonstrated that the / locus is a region of chalcone synthase (CHS) gene duplications that allows higher levels of CHS mRNAs and restore pigmentation to the seed coat and that the spontaneous deletions erase the gene-silencing phenomena.

- 2004
Analysis of the Petunia species that contributed to the hybrid nature of P. hybrida shows that none of the CHS gene clusters is specific for either one of the parents and therefore did not arise as a consequence of the hybridization, inferring that theCHS subfamilies arose from very recent gene duplications.
