The immune response to infection must be controlled to ensure it is optimal for defense while avoiding the consequences of excessive inflammation, which include fatal septic shock. Mice deficient in FcgammaRIIb, an inhibitory immunoglobulin G Fc receptor, have enhanced immune responses.
