This paper initiates the study of fault resilient network structures that mix two orthogonal protection mechanisms:(a) <i>backup</i>, namely, augmenting the structure with many (redundant) low-cost but fault-prone components, and (b) <i>reinforcement</i>, namely, acquiring high-cost but fault-resistant components.
