A modified spiral imaging technique is presented, in which the conventional sinusoidal gradient waveforms are replaced by trapezoidal ones. In addition to allowing a reduced data acquisition time, the new waveforms circumvent specific hardware restrictions on the minimum scan repetition time.

Magnetic Resonance Image Reconstruction from Nonuniformly Sampled k -space Data
TLDR
Medical doctors exert perennial pressure on scanner manufacturers to reduce the measurement time of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, but often the adopted tactics amount to nonuniform undersampling, which complicates reconstruction of the MR image.

TLDR
A new method is introduced for increasing the efficiency in multislice single spin‐echo MRI, resulting in an effective use of the echo delay time between RF excitation and reception, indicating that a substantial increase is scan speed can be achieved without loss in image signal‐to‐noise ratio or contrast.

TLDR
This study describes a closed‐form approximate solution for interleaved Archimedian spiral trajectories that closely matches the exact design.
Simple but reliable solutions for spiral MRI gradient design.
TLDR
This paper shows that simple but reasonable mathematical approximations deliver reliable analytical solutions for spiral MRI and images obtained using these analytical solutions do not show evident distortions when compared with images obtained with numerical solutions.
B1 INHOMOGENEITY COMPENSATION IN MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)
This thesis concentrates on the reduction of RF field (or B1) inhomogeneity in high magnetic field MRI. B1 inhomogeneity is one of the major drawbacks in high field MRI. The non-uniformity causes
Spatio-temporal sampling strategies and spiral imaging for translational cardiac MRI
TLDR
The proposed reconstruction method, k-t SPIRE, takes into account the temporal information of data which helps to resolve the undersampling artifacts and showed important improvements compared to the classical method both in numerical simulations and in-vivo.
Spiral imaging in fMRI
Spiral trajectory design: A flexible numerical algorithm and base analytical equations
TLDR
This work presents a flexible numerical algorithm for designing trajectories based on explicit definition of radial undersampling, and also gives several analytical expressions for charactering the base (critically sampled) class of these trajectories.
High resolution fast MRI and MRSI using spiral data acquisition
TLDR
Two in vivo applications of spiral data acquisition discussed in this thesis shows that spiral data Acquisition can shorten scan times by a factor of up to 10 and enable clinics to include advanced MR techniques such as Sel-MQC and time resolved 3D MRI to enhance diagnosis of cancer or vascular diseases.
Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Mapping Using a Multi-Shot Spiral MRI Sequence of the Rat Brain
TLDR
It has been demonstrated that the DW-SPIRAL sequence is capable of producing in vivo rat brain DWI and is appropriate for use in diffusion weighted imaging.

Fast 3D functional magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T with spiral acquisition
TLDR
A motor activation paradigm with a duration of less than 5 min, performed on 10 subjects, consistently showed significant changes in signal intensity in the area of the motor cortex, which survived high statistical thresholds.
Fast Spiral Coronary Artery Imaging
TLDR
A flow‐independent method for imaging the coronary arteries within a breath‐hold on a standard whole‐body MR imager was developed and fat suppression by a spectral‐spatial pulse improves the visualization of the arteries.
MRI using piecewise‐linear spiral trajectory
TLDR
A piecewise‐linear spiral trajectory which is composed of linear segments and rounded corners is described which reduces the slewing duty cycle while maintaining the desirable imaging properties of circular spirals including interleaving by simple gradient rotation.
Selection of a convolution function for Fourier inversion using gridding [computerised tomography application].
TLDR
The authors compare the artifact introduced into the image for various convolving functions of different sizes, including the Kaiser-Bessel window and the zero-order prolate spheroidal wave function (PSWF).
Spiral K‐space MR imaging of cortical activation
TLDR
Comparison of conventional and spiral k‐space MR imaging in the visual and motor cortex showed that artifacts were reduced with the spiral k-space method, while the area and degree of activation were similar.
A Velocity k‐Space Analysis of Flow Effects in Echo‐Planar and Spiral Imaging
TLDR
To compare the effects of trajectory differences, simulated images were generated by computing the k‐space values for an in‐plane vessel with parabolic flow, and whereas the resulting echo‐planar images demonstrate distortions and ghosting that depend on the vessel orientation, the spiral images exhibit minimal artifacts.
A comparison of fast MR scan techniques for cerebral activation studies at 1.5 Tesla
TLDR
The use of multislice 2D spiral scan for motor cortex fMRI experiments provided for a superior overall temporal stability, and an increased sensitivity compared with multislICE 2D EPI, and 3D spiral scans, which was attributed mainly to the difference in scan‐to‐scan stability.
Motion Artifacts in fMRI: Comparison of 2DFT with PR and Spiral Scan Methods
TLDR
It is shown that artifacts increase with TR for 2DFT methods, and that projection reconstruction (PR) and spiral methods have significantly reduced artifact intensities, because these trajectories collect low spatial frequencies with every view.
Clustered pixels analysis for functional MRI activation studies of the human brain
TLDR
This work presents a new cluster analysis model applicable to data with little or even no covariance between adjacent pixels, and is substantially more sensitive than both the conventional intensity‐only thresholding (IOT) method and the previous cluster method for signal change less than 6%, with maximum significant enhancement in sensitivity.
Iterative multi-scale registration without landmarks
TLDR
An automatic sub-pixel registration algorithm that minimizes the mean square difference of intensities between a reference and a test data set (volumes or images) and concludes that the multi-resolution refinement strategy is faster and more robust than a comparable single-scale one.
