To determine the influence of family history on vascular disease, we surveyed hospital patients discharged with a diagnosis of transient ischemic attack. Of 117 respondents, 81 knew their family history for myocardial infarction and 81 knew their family history for stroke. Of 83 responding 43 reported a personal history of myocardial infarction, and of 85 responding 66 reported a personal history of stroke. As expected, there was an association between positive family and personal histories of…
Contributions Family History in Patients With Transient Ischemic Attacks
TLDR
It is suggested that familial factors may be important in some subtypes of cerebrovascular disease and may relate to the older age at onset of most strokes, differing stroke subtypes in older age groups, or lower rates of fatal myocardial infarction.
The Importance of Family History in Cerebrovascular Disease
TLDR
Personal histories of ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia were found to be significant independent risk factors for stroke.
Familial history of stroke and stroke risk. The Family Heart Study.
TLDR
The increased risk of stroke among persons with a positive familial histories of stroke compared with those without a familial history of stroke is consistent with the expression of genetic susceptibility, a shared environment, or both in the etiology of stroke.
Parental History of Stroke Predicts Subclinical But Not Clinical Stroke: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
TLDR
The observed increased risk of subclinical stroke among individuals with a parental history of stroke is consistent with the expression of genetic susceptibility, a shared environment, or both in the etiology of stroke.
Family History of Stroke in Patients With Transient Ischemic Attack in Relation to Hypertension and Other Intermediate Phenotypes
TLDR
The strong association between hypertension and FHxstroke suggests that familial susceptibility to cerebral ischemia is attributable, at least partly, to familial predisposition to hypertension.
Family history of stroke does not predict risk of stroke after transient ischemic attack.
TLDR
Family history of stroke does not predict risk of ischemic stroke after TIA and detailed FHxstroke to baseline characteristics and subsequent risk of stroke in 2 population-based incidence studies and a consecutive hospital-referred series of patients with recent transient isChemic attack.
Is family history an independent risk factor for stroke?
TLDR
Genetic factors play a major part in the pathogenesis of subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracerebral haematoma via certain hereditary components such as hypertension, and even lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption, while in cerebral infarction, genetic factorsplay a minor part in its pathogenesis.
Family history and socioeconomic factors as predictors of myocardial infarction, unstable angina and stroke in an Italian population
AbstractA comprehensive case-control study was conducted in an Italian region in order to compare the influence of family history of cardiovascular events, socioeconomic factors, social networks, and

Family history of stroke as an independent predictor of ischemic heart disease in men and stroke in women.
TLDR
It is suggested that family history of stroke may be used as a marker for high-risk subjects and to identify and investigate other major genetic or environmental determinants for cardiovascular disease, particularly sex differences.
Family history of heart attack: a modifiable risk factor?
TLDR
Modifiable risk factors, i.e., blood pressure, plasma cholesterol, obesity, and cigarette smoking, have a differential effect on cardiovascular risk in those with and without a family history of heart attack.
Outcome of 314 patients with transient ischemic attacks.
TLDR
The result clearly emphasize treating of arterial hypertension, and demonstrate that TIA is not only a warning sign of impending stroke but also that of myocardial infarction.
Analysis of risk factors for stroke in a cohort of men born in 1913.
TLDR
Increased blood pressure, abdominal obesity, increased plasma fibrinogen level, and maternal history still correlated significantly with the risk of stroke, but a maternal history of stroke should probably be added to the list of risk factors for stroke among middle-aged men.
Risk factors for stroke and myocardial infarction in women in the United Kingdom as assessed in general practice: a case-control study.
TLDR
Key characteristics that were identified as risk factors either for subsequent stroke or for myocardial infarction included not only hypertension, diabetes, and past histories of stroke andMyocardial Infarction, but also past history of gynaecological cancer and of venous thrombosis.
A comparison of risk factors and prognosis for transient ischemic attacks and minor ischemic strokes. The Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project.
TLDR
The similarity of the two groups suggests that in many situations, including in clinical trials of treatments for the secondary prevention of strokes, the arbitrary distinction between them could be dispensed with.
A prognostic system for transient ischemia or minor stroke.
TLDR
For selected patients with carotid transient ischemia or minor stroke, five clinical features can be combined to stratify effectively the risk for a subsequent stroke or death.
Differences in mortality and cardiovascular morbidity during a 3-year follow-up of transient ischemic attacks and minor strokes.
TLDR
It is concluded that carotid-territory TIA indicates a worse prognosis than minor stroke as mortality is higher in TIA patients at the same preexisting vascular disease prevalence and stroke frequency.
