To clarify the role of the faecal flora in the diet-induced decrease of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) activity, 43 RA patients were randomized into two groups: the test group to receive living food, a form of uncooked vegan diet rich in lactobacilli, and the control group to continue their ordinary omnivorous diets. Based on clinical assessments before, during and after the intervention period, a disease improvement index was constructed for each patient. According to the index, patients were…

Changes of Intestinal Microflora in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis during Fasting or a Mediterranean Diet
- MedicineComplementary Medicine Research

Altered changes in SCFA were found in terms of significant changes to increased acetate levels in the fasting group and a correlation between changes of SCFA from intestinal microflora and disease activity in RA could not be revealed.

The results suggest that substances from oral and gut microbiota may influence disease activity in RA patients.

Although there were no statistical significant differences in the activity of RA, more subjects in the LGG group reported subjective well being, and more studies on the effects of probiotic bacteria in RA are needed.

Changes of faecal flora in rheumatoid arthritis during fasting and one-year vegetarian diet.
- MedicineBritish journal of rheumatology
- 1994
Significant alteration in the intestinal flora was observed when the patients changed from omnivorous to vegan diet and this finding of an association between intestinal flora and disease activity may have implications for the understanding of how diet can affect RA.

Computerized gas-liquid chromatography for bacterial cellular fatty acids present in the stool revealed that anaerobic bacteria are primarily responsible for the differences observed, suggesting that intestinal bacteria play a role in the development of RA.

The faecal flora of 25 out-patients with active rheumatoid arthritis was compared with that of 25 age- and sex-matched controls and revealed a significantly higher carriage rate of Clostridium perfringens and clostridial counts in patients with active or moderately active disease were significantly higher than in those with inactive disease.
