Fifteen patients with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) who had committed suicide while under inpatient care or within a month after discharge were compared with a group of 13 inpatients with a diagnosis of BPD who did not kill themselves. Suicides occurred in all ages from 20 to 49 years. Age, sex, and age when first in contact with psychiatry did not differ between groups. DIB profiles differed only with respect to slightly higher scores on the affect section among patients…
Suicide in borderline personality disorder: A meta-analysis
TLDR
The meta-analysis shows that suicide among patients with borderline personality disorder is more frequent when compared with the general population, and that suicide seems more alarming in the first phases of follow-up than during chronic phases of illness.
Suicide among subjects with personality disorders.

Suicide victims with personality disorders were almost always found to have had current depressive syndromes, psychoactive substance use disorders, or both.

TLDR
No evidence that full hospitalization prevents suicide completion by patients with borderline personality, suicidal risk is not a contraindication for day hospital treatment and Clinicians' fear of potential litigation resulting from a completed suicide should not be the basis for admission.
Suicide among personality-disordered offenders: a follow-up study of 1943 male criminal offenders
TLDR
Among personality-disordered offenders suicide methods did not differ from those of suicide victims in the general population, and there was no association between violent index criminality or between life-time violent criminality and choice of a violent suicide method.
Where Schizophrenic Patients Commit Suicide: A Review of Suicide among Inpatients and Former Inpatients
TLDR
Evidence suggests that suicide is generally carried-out by patients who have been recently discharged or by those who manage to get away from the hospital, and the need to establish guidelines for the prevention of suicide in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia is emphasized.
The longitudinal pattern of suicidal behaviour in borderline personality disorder: a prospective follow‐up study
TLDR
BPD patients with a history of suicide attempts were more suicidal at index admission, continued to be so over the follow‐up period and differed systematically in an unfavourable direction from other BPD patients on the major outcome measures.
Suicide attempts in major depressed patients with personality disorder.
TLDR
Suicide attempters who met criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) comorbid with major depressive disorder (MDD) and BPD had more frequent previous suicide attempts and were more likely to have a history of aggressive behaviors and alcohol and drug use disorders compared with patients suffering from MDD without Axis IIComorbidity.
Characteristics of suicide attempts of patients with major depressive episode and borderline personality disorder: a comparative study.
TLDR
Comorbidity of borderline personality disorder with major depressive episode increases the number and seriousness of suicide attempts and Hopelessness predicted lethal intent in all three groups and predicted objective planning in the group with both disorders.
Suicidal behavior in borderline personality disorder: prevalence, risk factors, prediction, and prevention.
TLDR
Clinicians must avoid the mistake of thinking that a pattern of repeated attempts indicates little desire to die, because BPD is frequently complicated by suicidal behavior.
A possible clinical classification for the psychopathology of suicidal intent among psychiatric inpatients committing suicide.
  • A. Shah, T. Ganesvaran

International journal of psychiatry in clinical practice
  • 1999
TLDR
A study of inpatient suicides over 21 years allowed an opportunity to develop a potentially useful clinical classification of the psychopathology of Suicidal intent, which would be clinically helpful and might assist further improvement in the management of psychiatric inpatients.
