Context Estimates of risk for venous thromboembolism associated with factor V Leiden vary. Contribution This population-based cohort study found that heterozygotes and homozygotes for factor V Leiden had about 3 and 18 times higher risks for venous thromboembolism than noncarriers. Absolute 10-year risks for thromboembolism were 0.7% and 3% among heterozygotes and homozygotes younger than 40 years of age who did not smoke and were not overweight.
