Four new species of the genus Neoempheria Osten Sacken from China are described.Type specimens are depoited in the Insect collections of Beijing Agricultural University. 1. Neoempheria magna sp. nov. (fig. 1) Distance between two tergal lateral appendages Iarge, with a bunch of dark short stoutsetae apically; sternal lateral appendages broad and short, very different from other species ofthe genus. Taxonomy of fungus gnats allied to Neoempheria ferruginea (Brunetti, 1912) (Diptera: Mycetophilidae), with descriptions of 11 new species from Japan and adjacent areas.

Morphological similarities and differences among N. ferruginea and allied species are discussed and the usefulness of the male gonocoxite and associated structures, and the gonapophysis of the female 8th and 9th abdominal sternites for taxonomy are discussed.
