Simulations of the formation of late-type spiral galaxies in a cold dark matter (ΛCDM) universe have traditionally failed to yield realistic candidates. Here we report a new cosmological N-body/smooth particle hydrodynamic simulation of extreme dynamic range in which a close analog of a Milky Way disk galaxy arises naturally. Named “Eris,” the simulation follows the assembly of a galaxy halo of mass Mvir = 7.9 × 1011  M☉ with a total of N = 18.6 million particles (gas + dark matter + stars…

FORMING EARLY-TYPE GALAXIES IN ΛCDM SIMULATIONS. I. ASSEMBLY HISTORIES

We present a sample of nine high-resolution cosmological simulations in the mass range of Mvir = 7 × 1011–4 × 1012 M☉ starting from ΛCDM initial conditions. Our simulations include primordial

THE BARYON CYCLE OF DWARF GALAXIES: DARK, BURSTY, GAS-RICH POLLUTERS

We present results from a fully cosmological, very high-resolution, ΛCDM simulation of a group of seven field dwarf galaxies with present-day virial masses in the range Mvir = 4.4 × 108–3.6 × 1010

THE CIRCUMGALACTIC MEDIUM OF MASSIVE GALAXIES AT z ∼ 3: A TEST FOR STELLAR FEEDBACK, GALACTIC OUTFLOWS, AND COLD STREAMS

We present new results on the kinematics, thermal and ionization state, and spatial distribution of metal-enriched gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of massive galaxies at redshift ∼3, using the

THE ORIGIN OF METALS IN THE CIRCUMGALACTIC MEDIUM OF MASSIVE GALAXIES AT z = 3

We present a detailed study of the metal-enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM) of a massive galaxy at z = 3 using results from “ErisMC,” a new cosmological hydrodynamic “zoom-in” simulation of a disk

Baryonic and dark matter distribution in cosmological simulations of spiral galaxies

We study three cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way(MW)-sized haloes including a comparison with the dark matter(DM)-only counterparts. We find one of our simulated galaxies with

The formation of disc galaxies in high-resolution moving-mesh cosmological simulations

We present cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of eight Milky Way-sized haloes that have been previously studied with dark matter only in the Aquarius project. For the first time, we employ the

GARROTXA COSMOLOGICAL SIMULATIONS OF MILKY WAY-SIZED GALAXIES: GENERAL PROPERTIES, HOT-GAS DISTRIBUTION, AND MISSING BARYONS

We introduce a new set of simulations of Milky Way (MW)-sized galaxies using the AMR code ART + hydrodynamics in a Λ cold dark matter cosmogony. The simulation series is called GARROTXA and it

HALO EXPANSION IN COSMOLOGICAL HYDRO SIMULATIONS: TOWARD A BARYONIC SOLUTION OF THE CUSP/CORE PROBLEM IN MASSIVE SPIRALS

A clear prediction of the cold dark matter (CDM) model is the existence of cuspy dark matter halo density profiles on all mass scales. This is not in agreement with the observed rotation curves of

DIFFUSE CORONAE IN COSMOLOGICAL SIMULATIONS OF MILKY WAY-SIZED GALAXIES

We investigate the properties of halo gas using three cosmological “zoom-in” simulations of realistic Milky Way-galaxy analogs with varying sub-grid physics. In all three cases, the mass of hot (T >

COSMOLOGICAL SIMULATIONS OF MILKY WAY-SIZED GALAXIES

We introduce a new set of eight Milky Way-sized cosmological simulations performed using the AMR code Adaptive Refinement Tree + Hydrodynamics in a ΛCDM cosmology. The set of zoom-in simulations
