The growing levels of trade in intermediate goods and foreign direct investment are two distinctive features of present globalization. Although they have been analyzed separately in the empirical literature, their interaction has remained largely unexplored. Using the gravity equations method, this study examines the relationship between outward FDI stocks and finished and intermediate goods exports in the US economy over the period from 1989 to 2003.
