This paper is a short history of the IBM FORTRAN Monitor System (FMS) and its follow-ons, which provided a popular early "work horse" operating system for the IBM 704/9/90 computer systems FORTRAN users beginning at the end of 1959. The events and environment leading up to this sytem are explored.
