Recently, a considerable amount of interest has focused on the numerical solution of the equations of compressible flow and in particular the compressible Euler equations. Research in this area is currently dominated by finite difference methods, especially in the United States. Several innovations have been made in recent years and presently finite difference procedures are being effectively utilized on a number of problems of engineering interest.
