Light scalar particles with couplings of sub-gravitational strength, which can generically be called 'dilatons', can produce violations of the equivalence principle. However, in order to understand experimental sensitivities one must know the coupling of these scalars to atomic systems. We report here on a study of the required couplings. We give a general Lagrangian with five independent dilaton parameters and calculate the 'dilaton charge' of atomic systems for each of these. Two combinations… Expand
Equivalence Principle Violations and Couplings of a Light Dilaton
We consider possible violations of the equivalence principle through the exchange of a light ‘dilaton-like’ scalar field. Using recent work on the quark-mass dependence of nuclear binding, we findExpand
Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar dark matter
In this paper, we study the local observational consequences of a violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle induced by models of light scalar Dark Matter (DM). We focus on two different modelsExpand
Test of the Equivalence Principle in the Dark Sector on Galactic Scales
The Einstein Equivalence Principle is a fundamental principle of the theory of General Relativity. While this principle has been thoroughly tested with standard matter, the question of its validityExpand
Theoretical Aspects of the Equivalence Principle
We review several theoretical aspects of the Equivalence Principle (EP). We emphasize the unsatisfactory fact that the EP maintains the absolute character of the coupling constants of physics whileExpand
Electroweak baryogenesis from temperature-varying couplings
Abstract The fundamental couplings of the Standard Model are known to vary as a function of energy scale through the Renormalisation Group (RG), and have been measured at the electroweak scale atExpand
MICROSCOPE Mission: First Constraints on the Violation of the Weak Equivalence Principle by a Light Scalar Dilaton.
It is found that, for masses smaller than 10^{-12}  eV, the constraints on the dilaton coupling parameters are improved by one order of magnitude compared to previous equivalence principle tests. Expand
Constraining the fundamental interactions and couplings with E
Abstract Upper bounds for the violation of the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) by the fundamental interactions have been given before. We now recompute the limits on the parameters measuring theExpand
Spatial variation of fundamental couplings and Lunar Laser Ranging
If the fundamental constants of nature have a cosmic spatial variation, there will in general be extra forces with a preferred direction in space which violate the equivalence principle. We show thatExpand

Couplings of a light dilaton and violations of the equivalence principle
Experimental discovery of the dilaton would provide strong evidence for string theory. A light dilaton could show up in current tests of the inverse square law for gravity at sub-millimeterExpand

The string dilation and a least coupling principle
Abstract It is pointed out that string-loop modifications of the low-energy matter couplings of the dilation may provide a mechanism for fixing the vacuum expectation value of a massless dilation inExpand
String theory and gravity

Testing general relativity with atom interferometry.
An experiment is proposed that will initially test the equivalence principle, and probe general relativistic effects - such as the nonlinear three-graviton coupling, the gravity of an atom's kinetic energy, and the falling of light - to several decimals. Expand
