Kelp (Laminaria japonica) is an economically important type of algae cultured in East Asia. Kelp waste is a by-product from the extraction of commercial alginate from kelp. This work reports the isolation of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) from the cellulose extracted from the kelp waste.
