Piezoelectric lithotripters have the smallest focal zone of all lithotripters. This small diameter-high pressure zone on the stone with continuous monitoring by ultrasonography throughout treatment minimizes the volume of the kidney exposed to potentially harmful pressure and avoids radiation hazards. We performed piezoelectric lithotripsy on 79 renal units of children 16 months to 14 years old. One child needed ureterorenoscopy for removal of Steinstrasse.
