We examined the distribution of extracellular matrix components in the proteinaceous matrix on explanted IOLs using immunohistochemistry to clarify the nature of proteinaceous deposits on the surfaces of IOLs. We examined 15 polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) IOLs and one silicone IOL explanted from patients. The IOLs were immunostained for cellular fibronectin, types I and IV collagen, and vitronectin.
