BACKGROUND Therapy with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) agents has been associated with lipoatrophy and lactic acidosis, presumably through inhibition of DNA polymerase-gamma and resultant mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion.
