To search for plant foodstuffs with potent anti-obese activity, we conducted a large scale screening based on the inhibitory activity on adipogenesis and the facilitating activity on adipolysis in vitro. That is, inhibition of intracellular lipid accumulation and facilitation of lipid degradation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes were extensively screened from ethanol and hexane extracts of approximately 100 kinds of plant foodstuffs marketed in Okinawa prefecture, which has been famous for the highest…
Hypolipidemic Effects of Ethanol Extracts of Citrus depressa and Annona atemoya, Typical Plant Foodstuffs in Okinawa, Japan on KKAy Mice Fed with Moderately High Fat Diet
TLDR
This is the first report on the hypolipidemic effects of C. depressa and A. atemoya consumed by the Okinawan population and shows that reduced fatty acid mobilization from the adipose tissue by the A.Atemoya extract may result in the reduction in TG synthesis in the liver.
Averrhoa carambola L. peel extract suppresses adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells.
TLDR
The ability of Averrhoa carambola L. peel extract commonly known as star fruit to effectively suppress adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes is reported for the first time and (-)-Epicatechin was identified as a bioactive compound likely responsible for this suppression.
Traditional Food Items in Ogimi, Okinawa: l-Serine Content and the Potential for Neuroprotection
TLDR
Analysis of the Ogimi diet suggests that l-serine should be evaluated for therapeutic potential as a neuroprotective agent.
Effects of Sargassum oligocystum and Padina australis extract on Adipogenesis and Adipolysis in 3T3-L1 Cells
In recent years, the search for natural, safe and effective therapies for the management of obesity has become important. The present study investigated the potential of brown seaweeds Sargassum
Ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis L. Voigt) root suppresses adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells
TLDR
This is the first study to demonstrate that ivy gourd root may prevent obesity based mainly on the ability of its active constituent(s) to suppress adipocyte differentiation in vitro.
Phenolic Compounds from Maté (Ilex paraguariensis) Inhibit Adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 Preadipocytes
TLDR
Polyphenol extract from the dried leaves was the most effective in the inhibition of triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, and rutin likely accounted for a large portion of this activity.
Oroxylin A, a constituent of Oroxylum indicum inhibits adipogenesis and induces apoptosis in 3T3-L1 cells.

Chemopreventive effect of Annona squamosa extract
TLDR
A significant reduction in tumor incidence, tumor burden and cumulative number of papillomas was observed in mice treated tropically with Annona sqamosa extracts as compared to the control group treated with DMBA and croton oil, revealing information about the prevention of cancer.
Screening of Dried Plant Seed Extracts for Adiponectin Production Activity and Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha Inhibitory Activity on 3T3-L1 Adipocytes
TLDR
The results point to the potential of dried seed extracts as a means to modify the activity of tumor necrosis factor-alpha for the adiponectin production, and the effects on free radical scavenging activities in the dried seed extract.

Citrus aurantium and synephrine alkaloids in the treatment of overweight and obesity: an update
TLDR
While some evidence is promising, it is concluded that larger and more rigorous clinical trials are necessary to draw adequate conclusions regarding the safety and efficacy of C. aurantium and synephrine alkaloids for promoting weight loss.
α-Lipoic Acid Inhibits Adipocyte Differentiation by Regulating Pro-adipogenic Transcription Factors via Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase Pathways*
TLDR
It is reported that α-Lipoic acid inhibited differentiation of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes induced by a hormonal mixture or troglitazone and this inhibition was accompanied with attenuated expression of adipocyte-specific fatty acid-binding protein and lipoprotein lipase.
Inhibition of 11βHSD1 with the S-phenylethylaminothiazolone BVT116429 increases adiponectin concentrations and improves glucose homeostasis in diabetic KKAy mice
TLDR
Inhibition of 11β HSD1 can be expected to be beneficial for treating the pathology of type 2 diabetes mellitus and increases in adiponectin concentrations may be an integral component in the mechanism of action of this new selective inhibitor.
Lipolysis induced by segment wall extract from Satsuma mandarin orange (Citrus unshu Mark).
TLDR
The results suggest that the segment wall, an edible fraction, from Satsuma mandarin orange might be useful as a functional food, especially as a fat-reducing material.
Determination of octopamine, synephrine and tyramine in Citrus herbs by ionic liquid improved 'green' chromatography.
Simultaneous analysis of adrenergic amines and flavonoids in citrus peel jams and fruit juices by liquid chromatography: part 2.
TLDR
The method has been successfully applied to the determination of adrenergic amines and flavonoids in several samples of Citrus fruit juices and jams and varied to a large extent depending on the type of the Citrus species used.
Perilipin A is essential for the translocation of hormone-sensitive lipase during lipolytic activation
TLDR
It is shown that HSL is basally associated with lipid droplet surfaces at a low level in perilipin nulls, but that stimulated translocation from the cytosol to lipid droplets is absent in adipocytes derived from embryonic fibroblasts of perilip in-null mice.
Caloric Restriction, the Traditional Okinawan Diet, and Healthy Aging
TLDR
Investigation of archived population data on the elderly cohort of Okinawans for evidence of CR lends epidemiologic support for phenotypic benefits of CR in humans and is consistent with the well‐known literature on animals with regard to CR phenotypes and healthy aging.
