This paper proposes that the field of inquiry in interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) needs to be extended beyond the cross-cultural investigation of speech acts, and argues that pragmatic knowledge of a foreign/second language (L2) includes more than the sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic abilities for understanding and performing speech acts.
