Epidermal melanocytes execute specific physiological programs in response to UV radiation (UVR) at the cutaneous interface. Many melanocytic responses, including increased dendrite formation, enhanced melanogenesis/melanization, and cell cycle arrest impact the ability of melanocytes to survive and to attenuate the UVR insult.
