We isolated the full-length cDNAs of engrailed and dpp-BMP2/4 orthologues from the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis and examined their expression patterns during development by the whole mount in situ hybridization. At the gastrula and trochophore stages, engrailed is expressed in the peripheral ectoderm of the presumptive and invaginating shell gland, corroborating its role in the shell formation that is widely conserved among molluscs. At the same stages, dpp-BMP2/4 is expressed in the right-hand…
Possible functions of Dpp in gastropod shell formation and shell coiling
TLDR
Results indicated that dpp plays important roles in the formation and coiling of the shell in this gastropod species.
Involvement of Hox genes in shell morphogenesis in the encapsulated development of a top shell gastropod (Gibbula varia L.)
TLDR
The results suggest that Hox genes are coopted to various functions in molluscs, which suggest that the molecular mechanisms underlying shell synthesis may consist of numerous conserved pattern-formation genes.
Left-right asymmetric expression of dpp in the mantle of gastropods correlates with asymmetric shell coiling
TLDR
The results provide a molecular explanation for shell, coiling including new insights into expression patterns in post-embryonic development, which should aid in understanding how various shell shapes are formed and have evolved in the gastropods.
Expression patterns indicate that BMP2/4 and Chordin, not BMP5-8 and Gremlin, mediate dorsal–ventral patterning in the mollusk Crassostrea gigas
TLDR
The first report of a Chordin gene in a lophotrochozoan species and of the opposite expression of BMP2/4 (dorsal) and ChordIn (ventral) along the D/V axis of a lothian embryo are presented.
Cloning and expression patterns of two Smad genes during embryonic development and shell formation of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas
TLDR
The identification, cloning and characterization of two Smad genes, the key components of TGF-β signaling pathways, from the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, reveal conserved functional characteristics and provide fundamental support for elucidating how TGI signaling pathways participate in the early development of bivalve mollusks.
An ancient process in a modern mollusc: early development of the shell in Lymnaea stagnalis
TLDR
A detailed spatial and temporal map of cell movements and differentiation events during early shell development in L. stagnalis is provided to establish a platform for future work aimed at elucidation of the molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks that underlie the evo-devo of the molluscan shell.

Expression of Patella vulgata orthologs of engrailed and dpp-BMP2/4 in adjacent domains during molluscan shell development suggests a conserved compartment boundary mechanism.
TLDR
It is concluded that engrailed and dpp are most likely involved in setting up a compartment boundary between these cells, very similar to the situation in, for example, the developing wing imaginal disc in Drosophila.
Shell differentiation and engrailed expression in the Ilyanassa embryo
TLDR
In situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry is used to study the expression of the engrailed-related gene, Ily-en in embryos of the marine mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta to find that Ily- en is only expressed in shell gland cells.
Engrailed in cephalopods: a key gene related to the emergence of morphological novelties
TLDR
An engrailed cognate is identified in the squid Loligo, which provides new evidence that engrailing in molluscs is not restricted to a ‘shell function’ and has been recruited in the mollusc lineage for the emergence of morphological novelties in cephalopods.
Molluscan engrailed expression, serial organization, and shell evolution
TLDR
In situ hybridization and antibody studies show iterated engrailed‐gene expression in transverse rows of ectodermal cells bounding plate field development and spicule formation in the chiton, Lepidochitona caverna, as well as in cells surrounding the valves and in the early development of the shell hinge in the clam, Transennella tantilla.
Molecular characterization and silk gland expression of Bombyx engrailed and invected genes.
TLDR
The isolation of two en-like cDNAs from the middle silk glands of Bombyx mori larvae are reported, revealing that they are the counterparts of Drosophila en and in and might be involved in the compartmentalization of the silk gland.
Evolutionary implications of the mode of D quadrant specification in coelomates with spiral cleavage
In annelids, molluscs, echiurans and sipunculids the establishment of the dorsal‐ventral axis of the embryo is associated with D quadrant specification during embryogenesis. This specification occurs
Genomic organization and developmental pattern of expression of the engrailed gene from the brine shrimp Artemia.
TLDR
The evidence presented here is compatible with the hypothesis that intercellular signaling mechanisms are in part responsible of the early activation of selector genes.
The expression of an engrailed protein during embryonic shell formation of the tusk‐shell, Antalis entalis (Mollusca, Scaphopoda)
TLDR
The single anlage of the scaphopod protoconch contradicts earlier hypotheses of a monophyletic taxon Diasoma (Scaphopoda + Bivalvia), which has been mainly based on the assumption of a primarily bilobed shell in both taxa.
Expression of anterior Hox genes during larval development of the gastropod Haliotis asinina
TLDR
Molecular alignments and phylogenetic analysis indicate that the anterior Hox genes are homologues of Drosophila HOM‐C genes labial, proboscipedia, zen, Deformed, and Sex combs reduced, and expression maintained in ectodermal and neuroectodermal tissues.
