BACKGROUND & AIMS The rate of 12alpha-hydroxylation of bile acid intermediates is believed to determine the ratio of cholic acid (CA) to chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) biosynthesis and the overall hydrophobicity of the bile acid pool.
