Willow cells transformed with an ipt gene from Agrobacterium tumefaciens grow in tissue culture as undifferentiated callus without shoot induction. We show that the transformed calluses contained high levels of the cytokinins 9-β-D-ribofuranosyl zeatin and its monophosphate, demonstrating the presence of a functional isopentenyl transferase enzyme.
