The Vi antigen in Salmonella typhi is stably expressed and may act to protect the strain against the defensive system of the host. Citrobacter freundii, not usually a common human pathogen, also expresses the Vi antigen but expresses it unstably, exhibiting a reversible transition between the Vi+ and Vi- states.
