In the central auditory system, cartwheel cells (CWCs) are a group of interneurons in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). While other DCN neurons respond to stimuli with a simple discharge pattern of single action potentials (SAPs), CWCs respond with complex action potentials (CAPs), consisting of SAPs superimposed on a slow depolarization. The CAPs in CWCs may participate in various auditory or non‑auditory signaling processing but its intrinsic mechanisms are largely unknown. In the present…

SCN11A gene deletion causes sensorineural hearing loss by impairing the ribbon synapses and auditory nerves
TLDR
A role of Nav1.9 in regulating the function of ribbon synapses and the auditory nerves is suggested in regulating and controlling cochlear synaptopathy in mice knockout with SCN11A gene deletion.

Cartwheel and superficial stellate cells of the dorsal cochlear nucleus of mice: intracellular recordings in slices.
TLDR
The locations from which exciteatory input can be driven electrically are consistent with cartwheel cells receiving excitatory synaptic input from granule cells.
Physiology and morphology of complex spiking neurons in the guinea pig dorsal cochlear nucleus
TLDR
The hypothesis that cartwheel cells are a specific cell type that generates complex action potentials is investigated, based on their analogous anatomical, developmental, and biochemical similarities to cerebellar Purkinje cells, which are known to discharge complexaction potentials.
NaN, a novel voltage-gated Na channel, is expressed preferentially in peripheral sensory neurons and down-regulated after axotomy.
Although physiological and pharmacological evidence suggests the presence of multiple tetrodotoxin-resistant (TTX-R) Na channels in neurons of peripheral nervous system ganglia, only one, SNS/PN3,
Diversity of Expression of the Sensory Neuron-Specific TTX-Resistant Voltage-Gated Sodium Ion Channels SNS and SNS2
TLDR
The differential distribution of two tetrodotoxin resistant (TTXr) voltage-gated sodium channels SNS (PN3) and SNS2 (NaN) in rat primary sensory neurons has been investigated and at least four different classes of A- and C-fiber DRG neurons exist, therefore, with respect to expression of these sodium channels.
Persistent sodium current contributes to induced voltage oscillations in locomotor-related hb9 interneurons in the mouse spinal cord.
TLDR
The finding that persistent sodium current (INaP) regulates locomotor-related rhythmic activity in Hb9 INs independently of primary synaptic transmission supports the concept that these neurons constitute an integral component of the rhythmogenic locomotor network in the mouse spinal cord.
Blockade of Persistent Sodium Currents Contributes to the Riluzole-Induced Inhibition of Spontaneous Activity and Oscillations in Injured DRG Neurons
TLDR
Using in vivo recordings from single medium- and large-diameter fibers isolated from the compressed DRG in Sprague-Dawley rats, it is demonstrated for the first time that the INaP blocker riluzole selectively inhibits InaP and thereby blocks SMPOs and the ectopic spontaneous activity of injured A-type DRG neurons.
Persistent TTX-resistant Na+ current affects resting potential and response to depolarization in simulated spinal sensory neurons.
TLDR
While the persistent TTX-R current is not a major contributor to the rapid depolarizing phase of the action potential, it contributes to setting the electrogenic properties of small DRG neurons by modulating their resting potentials and response to subthreshold stimuli.
Activation of mGluR5 induces spike afterdepolarization and enhanced excitability in medium spiny neurons of the nucleus accumbens by modulating persistent Na+ currents
TLDR
It is demonstrated that pharmacological and synaptic activation of mGluR5 increases the spike discharge of medium spiny neurons (MSNs) in the NAc, thereby inducing an ADP that results in enhanced MSN excitability.
Sodium-Mediated Plateau Potentials in Lumbar Motoneurons of Neonatal Rats
TLDR
Bistable behaviors are, to a large extent, determined by the interplay between three currents: L-type ICa, INaP, and a Na+-mediated ICaN flowing through putative TRPV2 channels.
