SUMMARY BACKGROUND Exposure of the thyroid gland to high-dose ionizing radiation is the only widely accepted environmental cause of thyroid cancer, which may occur from a number of sources, such as diagnostic radioiodine scans and computed tomography, radiation fallout, as occurred in Chernobyl, or stratospheric environmental contamination, as occurred during the 1950s from the testing of nuclear weapons in Nevada .
