In this article I outline the ideas behind the Open Archives Initiative metadata harvesting protocol (OAIMH), and attempt to clarify some common misconceptions. I then consider how the OAIMH protocol can be used to expose and harvest metadata. Perl code examples are given as practical illustration.

Open Archives Metadata Harvesting: An Overview

OAI and a protocols which harvests metadata i.e. OAI-PMH are discussed, which can be used by a variety of communities who are engaged in publishing content on the Web.

The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting: An Introduction

This paper looks into the issues leading to the OAI-PMH development as well as gives an inside view of the proposed model.

Randomized sampling: An approach to extraction of metadata records

An approach to extract random samples of metadata records from Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) repositories and others such as Z39.50 collections is presented.

Designing Metadata Harvesting Framework for OAI-based LIS Repositories: A Prototype

It may be concluded that this proposed harvesting framework may work as a guiding tool to those who plan to set up new OAI-based service provider and may be an interoperability solution to the professional librarians in designing and developing federated search option for multiple repositories from a single-window search interface.

The architecture and the interface of a metadata registry for a large e-learning site is presented and it aims to be an evolutionary change to the Web - using long established standards where possible.

Enhancing OAI Metadata for Eprint Services: two proposals

This short paper outlines two proposals for progress on full-text data harvesting and the export of processed data in the Open Archives Initiative.

Better interoperability through the Open Archives Initiative

Perhaps the strongest and distinguishing feature of OAI is its simplicity: by being ‘smaller’ than previous interoperability projects, it actually allows for more powerful and adaptable configurations and deployments.

Access Management in Federated Digital Libraries

This work has implemented a demonstration system that enables contributors to manage controlled access to their information to privileged users using a role-based policy editor and enables aggregators to reduce their maintenance overhead of dynamic user communities by delegating authentication and credential management responsibility to authorization authorities of the users.

Exposing Cross-Domain Resources for Researchers and Learners

The XML metadata repository, or 'metadatabase', provides a single point of access into the disparate, cross-domain MIMAS datasets and services, and a collection level database with records based on the RSLP Collection Level Description schema.

Open Wide: Using Open Standards in Academic Web Services

This paper will draw upon recent experiences at the UK's largest academic data centre providing web services to the education community to document some of the realities faced when implementing potentially valuable, though sometimes 'over-hyped' technologies.

About the Author

This review paper argues that as a result of the horizontal integration of all media in a common network and terminal infrastructure, telecommunications and networked-computing applications are no longer distinguishable and codify networked applications in accordance with their functionality and immediacy.
