  • Erythrocytes containing one or more granules that give a positive Prussian blue reaction for iron were apparently recognized by workers in the nineteenth century (1) but not until 1941 was the term "siderocyte" applied to them by Gruneberg (2, 3). The significance of siderocytes has been a matter of conjecture since their original description.
