There are ample data to suggest that colour pattern contributes to individual variation in susceptibility to visually orientated predators (e.g. Isley, 1938; Cott, 1940; Kettlewell, 1973; Brodie, 1992; Endler, 1991, 1995; GoÈ tmark, 1994; Forsman & Shine, 1995; Kingsolver, 1995, 1996).
