For diffusive stochastic dynamics, the probability to observe any individual trajectory is vanishingly small, making it unclear how to experimentally validate theoretical results for ratios of path probabilities. We provide the missing link between theory and experiment, by establishing a protocol to extract ratios of path probabilities from measured time series without fitting a model. For experiments on a single colloidal particle in a microchannel, we extract both ratios of path…

Irreversibility and entropy production along paths as a difference of tubular exit rates

The appealing theoretical measure of irreversibility in a stochastic process, as the inequality of the probabilities of a trajectory and its time reversal, cannot be accessed directly in experiment

Sojourn probabilities in tubes and pathwise irreversibility for It\^o processes

The sojourn probability of an Ito diffusion process, that is its probability to remain in the tubular neighborhood of a smooth path, is a central quantity in the study of path probabilities. Previous

Swimmer dynamics in externally driven fluid flows: The role of noise

We theoretically investigate the effect of random fluctuations on the motion of elongated microswimmers near hydrodynamic transport barriers in externally-driven fluid flows. Focusing on the

Stochastic action for tubes: Connecting path probabilities to measurement

The trajectories of diffusion processes are continuous but non-differentiable, and each occurs with vanishing probability. This introduces a gap between theory, where path probabilities are used in

Experimental evidence of symmetry breaking of transition-path times

This work systematically investigates transition-path-time symmetry and reports evidence of its breakdown on the molecular- and meso-scale out of equilibrium, and shows symmetry breaking in the transition times under an external force that drives the system out ofilibrium.

Fast Bayesian inference of optical trap stiffness and particle diffusion

Bayesian methods for inferring the parameters of the overdamped Brownian motion of a particle confined in an optical trap, the trap stiffness and the particle diffusion coefficient are presented that use exact likelihoods and sufficient statistics to arrive at simple expressions for the maximum a posteriori estimates.

Anomalous Scaling of Dynamical Large Deviations.

It is shown that an anomalous power-law scaling in time of large deviations can also arise without long-range correlations in Markovian processes as simple as the Langevin equation.

Entropy production along a stochastic trajectory and an integral fluctuation theorem.

The integrated sum of both Delatas(tot) is shown to obey a fluctuation theorem (exp([-Deltas( tot) = 1 for arbitrary initial conditions and arbitrary time-dependent driving over a finite time interval)).

Optimizing Brownian escape rates by potential shaping

It is shown experimentally that higher, fine-tuned barrier profiles result in significantly enhanced escape rates, in breach of the intuition relying on the above scaling law, and addressed in theory the corresponding conditions for maximum speed-up.

It is argued that both actions are equivalent prescriptions for the purposes of reweighting and sampling trajectories, whereas the most probable path is more generally given by the global minimum of the action involving the second derivative term.

Efficiency and, in particular, efficiency at maximum power can be discussed systematically beyond the linear response regime for two classes of molecular machines, isothermal ones such as molecular motors, and heat engines such as thermoelectric devices, using a common framework based on a cycle decomposition of entropy production.
