Experiences with the system XIKE (XML source Intensional Knowledge Extractor)

Abstract

In this chapter we propose XIKE (XML source Intensional Knowledge Extractor), a system conceived to derive intensional knowledge from XML sources. The knowledge extracted by XIKE consists of the so called intersource properties, i.e., terminological and semantic relationships existing among objects belonging to the involved sources. As will be shown in the following, extracted properties can be fruitfully exploited to guarantee a correct, efficient and effective interoperability among involved sources. This chapter is organized as follows: first, we present the motivations underlying XIKE and the general behaviour of this system; after this, we provide a detailed description of its modules and their interactions; then, we report on several experiments we carried out to test its performances; finally, we collocate it in the existing literature and illustrate its main novelties.
