The highly conserved SNARE proteins, SNAP-25, syntaxin and synaptobrevin, form a tight ternary complex, which is essential for exocytosis. Crystallization of this complex revealed a four-helix bundle with an unusual hydrophilic layer (zero layer) in its center.
