Abstract Room temperature deposition of gold and silver on an air-cleaved CdS surface was studied by AES and LEELS. In the Au(film)-CdS(substrate) system, diffusion of both Cd and S atoms was observed on top of the specimen surface at room temperature. Also, there was an intermixed interface layer between the metal overlayer and the CdS substrate.
