To probe the nature of the even-fraction quantum Hall system, we have investigated the low-lying excitation spectrum by exact diagonalization for finite systems. We have found (i) a striking one-to-one correspondence (i.e., a shell structure) between the spectrum and those for free (composite) fermions, (ii) a surprisingly straight scaling plot for the excitation energy that gives a zero gap (metal) in the thermodynamic limit, (iii) the effective mass evaluated from the scaling becoming heavier… Expand

Composite fermion picture and the spin states in the fractional quantum Hall system – a numerical study
Abstract As a crucial test for ‘how real are composite ferimons (CF's)’ we have examined the spin states for even-fraction Landau level fillings in the exact diagonalization of finite fractionalExpand
Interaction and dimensionality in the quantum Hall physics
Abstract While the composite fermion picture is so effective as to describe the excitation spectra including the spin wave for Laughlin's quantum liquid, “how heavy and how strongly-interacting”Expand
How heavy and how strongly interacting are composite fermions
Abstract We have numerically obtained the effective mass of the composite fermion in the fractional quantum Hall system by fitting the low-lying excitation spectrum for finite systems to the FermiExpand
Fermions out of dipolar bosons in the lowest Landau level
In the limit of very fast rotation atomic Bose-Einstein condensates may reside entirely in the lowest two-dimensional Landau level (LLL). For small enough filling factor of the LLL, one may haveExpand
Ground state phase diagram of 2D electrons in high magnetic field
Abstract The ground state phase diagram of two-dimensional electrons in high magnetic field is studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The low-energy excitations and pairExpand

Stripe State in the Lowest Landau Level
The stripe state in the lowest Landau level is studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The ground state energy and pair correlation functions are systematically calculatedExpand

An extrapolation method in shell model calculations with a deformed basis is presented, which uses a scaling property of energy and energy variance for a series of systematically approximated waveExpand
