A new method of exciting nonradiative surface plasma waves (SPW) on smooth surfaces, causing also a new phenomena in total reflexion, is described. Since the phase velocity of the SPW at a metal-vacuum surface is smaller than the velocity of light in vacuum, these waves cannot be excited by light striking the surface, provided that this is perfectly smooth. However, if a prism is brought near to the metal vacuum-interface, the SPW can be excited optically by the evanescent wave present in total…
Optical field enhancement by long-range surface-plasma waves.
Consider a TM polarized monochromatic wave that is in cident on the base of a prism from which it is totally internally reflected. If a metallic substrate is placed in the vicinity of the prism so
Investigation of nonlocal electromagnetic phenomena in thin silver films near the plasma frequency
Volume plasmons in a metallic slab can be excited by p-polarized light, as was previously shown in thin silver films by reflectivity measurements. We give results computed within a nonlocal theory
Method of frustrated total reflection in spectroscopy of surface polaritons in almost perfectly conducting metals
The standard technique for surface polaritons excitation by a prism coupling in Otto configuration is applied for investigation of almost perfectly conducting (pec) metals like tantalum irradiated by
Analytical Calculations of Scattering Amplitude of Surface Plasmon Polaritons Excited by a Spherical Nanoantenna
Since surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are surface waves, they cannot be excited by an incident plane wave, because free-space photons do not possess a sufficient in-plane momentum. Phase matching
Optical non-linearity in liquid crystals using surface plasmon-polaritons
The authors present a detailed report of the observation of a strong, thermally induced optical non-linearity in a system comprised of a silver film and a nematic liquid crystal, in which the surface
Multiple excitations of a surface-plasmon-polariton wave guided by a columnar thin film deposited on a metal grating
Abstract. Surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) wave excitation in a composite structure obtained by depositing a columnar thin film (CTF) on a metal (silver) substrate decorated periodically by an array
Excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors
This is a theoretical study of the resonant suppression of the specular reflection of terahertz waves in layered superconductors due to the excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves SJPWs. Here,
Theory of light scattering from a random metal surface: Excitation of surface plasmons in a Ag film
The scattering of light by a silver film with a random rough surface and the excitation of surface plasmon modes at the metal surface are theoretically studied in detail by means of the new
