}BACKGROUND
The study examines whether self-rated health forms a continuum from poor through average to good health in terms of two groups of health-related variables.
METHODS
The data come from the 1994 Finnish Survey on Living Conditions, a representative sample of Finnish men and women aged 25 years or older (n = 7290). Logistic regression analysis was used with two dependent variables: (1) average versus good/excellent self-rated health and (2) poor versus good/excellent self-rated health…

While physical conditions were strongly related to health perceptions, some lifestyle, socio-economic and psychosocial factors were also statistically significant and heavy smoking, irregular exercise and overweight were associated with fair/poor health ratings.

Differences between the predictors of subjective health and mortality, even though these outcomes were strongly associated, suggest that influences on subjective health are not restricted to serious disease.
Some Methodological Remarks on Self-Rated Health

The whole age interval was analysed and the choice of cut-off point for health dichotomisation had only a modest impact on the estimated effects of the covariates, but with a narrower categorisation of poor health, the effect of educational level, as well as of marital status, was found to be highly age-dependent.

Self-rated health and limiting longstanding illness are valid health measures appropriate for use in general health surveys and were strongly associated with each other as well as with specific health problems, particularly with serious conditions.

It appears that mental health functioning might be one of the most important factors used to determine the overall health in this population of adolescents, and parents and other adult mentors might be crucial in assisting adolescents to make appropriate choices regarding underlying health risks related to overall health functioning.
