Evolutionary Relationships of the Hawaiian and North American Telmatogeton (Insecta; Diptera: Chironomidae)
@inproceedings{Newman1988EvolutionaryRO, title={Evolutionary Relationships of the Hawaiian and North American Telmatogeton (Insecta; Diptera: Chironomidae)}, author={Leslie J. Newman}, year={1988} }
Species of Telmatogeton and the closely related genus Paraclunio generally live on the rocky shores of the intertidal zone. Species of Telmatogeton have evolved from the marine environment into torrential freshwater streams of the Hawaiian Islands . An analysis of the banding sequences of the polytene chromosomes of species of Telmatogeton and Paraclunio from the Hawaiian Islands and North America suggests that there were at least two separate invasions from the marine to freshwater…

The life cycle of thistemperately evolved caddisfly Cheumatopsyche pettiti was investigated in Waikolu Stream, Molokai and it was interpreted as probably multivoltinewith continuous recruitment throughout the year.
Life cycle of a torrenticolous Hawaiian chironomid (Telmatogeton torrenticola): stream flow and microhabitat effects
- Environmental Science
- 2003
A significant reduction in stream flow from 1994 to 1995 was correlated with a similar reduction in larval densities that precluded larval colonization of suboptimal habitats in 1995, thereby preventing sampling in this microhabitat during that summer.

A natural drought of the Iao Stream valley was associated with structural and functional changes in two endemic aquatic insects; these results are a conservative indication of permanent stream flow reductions from anthropogenic withdrawal.
Marine midge Telmatogeton japonicus Tokunaga (Diptera: Chironomidae) exploiting brackish water in Finland
- Environmental Science

These findings suggests that the species' distribution extends further northeast in the Baltic Sea than understood before, and that the Species is able to establish viable populations into fresh-brackish (salinity < 4 ‰) coastal habitats.
Role of Larval Sexual Dimorphism, Biased Sex Ratios, and Habitat on the Energetics of a Tropical Chironomid
- Environmental Science, BiologyEnvironmental entomology
- 2008
This study is one of the first to address sex dimorphism and sex ratios in estimates of standing stock biomass and secondary production, providing initial evidence that microhabitat quality is important to understanding chironomid population biology and the potential role of sex-related demographics in Estimates of productivity.
NOBANIS - Marine invasive species in Nordic waters - Fact Sheet Hemimysis anomala
- Geology
- 2010
It has sometimes been claimed to be a native of the NE Atlantic and invasive in New Zealand, but the earliest record from New Zealand is from 1921, and hence this may not be the native area, so it should probably be called cryptogenic.
Primer registro del género Clunio (Diptera: Chironomidae) asociado a las comunidades coralinas de islas Marietas, México
- Environmental Science
- 2014
This study is the first record of Clunio, as well as the annual changes in abundance at the Mexican Pacific, and the micro-substrate that adhered to the coral skeleton was identified and quantified; however, no relationship between the type of substrate and larval density was found.

Disturbance and predation in an assemblage of herbivorous Diptera and algae on rocky shores

The results suggest that disturbances favor blooms of some species by reducing predation, and severe localized disturbances increased the variability of the upper shore community by creating a patchwork of differing predator/prey abundances.
