The family Vibrionaceae is considered to be one of the most diverse and well-studied groups of bacteria. Here, evolution is assessed within the Vibrionaceae to determine whether multiple origins of eukaryotic associations have occurred within this diverse group of bacteria. Analyses were based on a large molecular dataset, along with a matrix that consisted of 100 biochemical and restriction digest characters. By using direct optimization methods to analyse both datasets individually and in…

THE EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY OF A SEPIOLID SQUID-VIBRIO ASSOCIATION: FROM CELL TO ENVIRONMENT.
TLDR
This work examines the transition between these forces effecting the symbiosis between sepiolid squids and Vibrio bacteria, and poses possible explanations as to why this association offers many attributes for understanding the role of symbiotic competence.
Systematic relationships within the Vibrionaceae (Bacteria: Gammaproteobacteria): steps toward a phylogenetic taxonomy
  • Rebecca B. Dikow
  • Biology
Cladistics : the international journal of the Willi Hennig Society
  • 2011
TLDR
A phylogenetic hypothesis is presented for all 95 species of the family Vibrionaceae based on a combined analysis of eight molecular loci for up to 9337 nucleotide characters, suggesting a new definition for Photobacterium that includes all species of Aliivibrio.
Microbial experimental evolution as a novel research approach in the Vibrionaceae and squid-Vibrio symbiosis
TLDR
Despite virtues provided by the Vibrionaceae and sepiolid squid-Vibrio symbiosis, these assets to evolutionary biology have yet to be fully utilized for microbial experimental evolution.
Microbial Biodiversity within the Vibrionaceae
TLDR
The Vibrionaceae is one of 22 families within the 14 orders of the g-Proteobacteria, one of the five subdivisions of the phylum Proteobacteria within the domain Bacteria.
Physiological Responses to Stress in the Vibrionaceae
TLDR
The family Vibrionaceae is comprised mostly of motile gram-negative chemoorganotrophs, possessing at least one polar flagellum, and the vast majority of vibrios require Na+ for growth and survival.
Gene sequences of the pil operon reveal relationships between symbiotic strains of Vibrio fischeri.
TLDR
Hawaiian and Australian symbiotic strains form one monophyletic tree, supporting the hypothesis that V. fischeri strain specificity is selected by the geographical location of their hosts and is not related to specific squid species.
Phylogenetic analysis of host–symbiont specificity and codivergence in bioluminescent symbioses
TLDR
In several associations, bacterial species identities contradicted strict host family bacterial species specificity and the hypothesis of codivergence in bioluminescent symbioses was refuted.
Biodiversity among luminescent symbionts from squid of the genera Uroteuthis, Loliolus and Euprymna (Mollusca: Cephalopoda)
TLDR
Evidence is presented of species of luminescent bacteria that have not been previously described as symbiotic strains colonizing light organs of Indo‐West Pacific loliginid and sepiolid squids, and supports the hypothesis of a non‐species‐specific association between certain sepiolids and lolig inid squid hosts and marine luminescence bacteria.
Quorum sensing in Vibrio spp.: the complexity of multiple signalling molecules in marine and aquatic environments
  • Léa Girard
  • Biology
    Critical reviews in microbiology
  • 2019
TLDR
This review summarizes the different known QS pathways, the diversity of AIs as well as their biological functions, and the QS-mediated interactions between Vibrio and other organisms and discusses the different perspectives in order to better apprehend QS in natural habitats.
Population structure between environmentally transmitted vibrios and bobtail squids using nested clade analysis
TLDR
This study examined the variation and history of three allopatric Euprymna squid species and their respective Vibrio symbionts to highlight the importance of how interactions between symbiotic organisms can unexpectedly shape population structure in phylogeographical studies.

TLDR
The association between the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri and the sepiolid squid Euprymna scolopes has emerged as a productive model system for the investigation of the mechanisms by which cooperative bacteria initiate colonization of specific host tissues.
Microbial Biodiversity within the Vibrionaceae
TLDR
The Vibrionaceae is one of 22 families within the 14 orders of the g-Proteobacteria, one of the five subdivisions of the phylum Proteobacteria within the domain Bacteria.
Competitive Dominance among Strains of Luminous Bacteria Provides an Unusual Form of Evidence for Parallel Evolution in Sepiolid Squid-Vibrio Symbioses
TLDR
Experimental evidence for parallel speciation patterns among several partners of the sepiolid squid-luminous bacterial symbioses is reported, indicating a pronounced dominance of native symbiont strains over nonnative strains and revealing a hierarchy of symbionts competency that reflects the phylogenetic relationships of the partners.
Phylogenetic relationships of marine bacteria, mainly members of the family Vibrionaceae, determined on the basis of 16S rRNA sequences.
TLDR
The phylogenetic relationships of 50 reference strains, mostly marine bacteria which require Na+ for growth, were determined on the basis of 600 16S rRNA nucleotides by using reverse transcriptase sequencing, and the family Vibrionaceae was separated into at least seven groups (genera and families).
Establishment of an animal-bacterial association: recruiting symbiotic vibrios from the environment.
TLDR
It is discovered that when newly hatched squid were experimentally exposed to natural seawater, the animals responded by secreting a viscous material from the pores of the organ, suggesting that this mode of infection may be an example of a widespread strategy by which aquatic hosts increase the likelihood of successful colonization by rarely encountered symbionts.

Evolutionary relationships in Vibrio and Photobacterium as determined by immunological studies of superoxide dismutase
The amino acid sequence divergence of superoxide dismutases (SODs) from 22 species and five groups of Vibrio, Photobacterium, and a number of related organisms was determined by means of the
Numerical classification of species of Vibrio and related genera.
TLDR
The results showed that data obtained from studies carried out at different times and in different locations, but using standard techniques, could be combined and used to provide useful taxonomic information.
