Evolution of compact groups and the formation of elliptical galaxies

title={Evolution of compact groups and the formation of elliptical galaxies},
  author={Joshua E. Barnes},
The dynamical evolution of gravitationally bound groups of galaxies should account for some of the objects seen in the Universe. A numerical simulation of the merging of a compact group shows that the process may result in the formation of bright ellip-tical galaxies. If compact groups are interpreted as transient phases in the dynamical evolution of looser groups, the merger remnants they leave behind exemplify galaxy formation at the present epoch.
Observations about dynamical aspects of compact groups of galaxies are reviewed, and N-body numerical simulations are applied in order to lend theoretical interpretations to the observational
The formation of compact groups of galaxies
In the compact group of galaxies the galaxies can merge into a few massive ones in a very short time, so they must be formed very recently. On the other hand, according to the theory of structure
Mass Distribution in Compact Groups
New redshift surveys of galaxies in the field of compact groups have discovered a population of faint galaxies which act as satellites orbiting in the potential well of the bright group. Here we
On the Verge of Coalescence: a Dusty Group of Galaxies
We found a new, very compact group of galaxies characterized by a median projected separation between galaxies of 5.2/h kpc and a very low velocity dispersion. All the observed member galaxies show
Compact Groups of Galaxies
▪ Abstract Compact groups of galaxies have posed a number of challenging questions. Intensive observational and theoretical studies are now providing answers to many of these and, at the same time,
Optical Colors of Early-Type Galaxies in Compact Groups
Compact groups of galaxies with high spatial densities and low velocity dispersions are very unstable to merging. The mergers of spiral galaxies shoud be common in these environments, and if
The chemical evolution of galaxies
The chemical evolution of galaxies is discussed starting with the simple box model. It is shown that this model with the additional assumption of metal-rich outflow provides a first useful insight
Merger History of Central Galaxies in Semi-analytic Models of Galaxy Formation
We investigate the dynamical evolution of galaxies in groups with different formation epochs. Galaxy groups have been selected to be in different dynamical states, namely dynamically old and
On the Large‐Scale Structure of Hickson Compact Groups of Galaxies
Abstract: We present a study on the integral two‐point correlation functions of Hickson compact groups of galaxies. The results show no evidence that these objects form large‐scale structures beyond
The Onset of a Three-Galaxy Merger in the Compact Group of Galaxies HCG 95?
In this Letter we report new evidence for a close three-galaxy interaction in the compact group of galaxies HCG 95. Deep optical imaging in the Johnson UBVRI bands and in narrowband Hα have shown

Merging instability in groups of galaxies
We present the results and the interpretation of N-body simulations for the dynamical evolution of galaxy groups. We find that, for group sizes not more than about 20 galactic radii, slow hyperbolic
Dynamics of small groups of galaxies. I. Virialized groups
The dynamical evolution of small groups of galaxies from an initial virial equilibrium state is investigated by means of numerical simulations. The basic scheme is a gravitational N-body code in
Morphology of galaxies in compact groups
Results of a study of galaxy morphology in a homogeneous sample of 98 compact groups of galaxies are reported. Of all the galaxies, 49 percent are of late morphological type (S + Irr), somewhat less
Formation and dynamics of shells around elliptical galaxies
Attention has recently ben drawn to exitence of sharply defined, shell-like, optical features in the outer regions of any elliptical galaxies. Simple N-body models have been constructed which show
Neutral hydrogen in compact groups of galaxies
Integrated H I profiles were detected for 34 of 51 Hickson compact groups (HCGs) of galaxies, and sensitive upper limits to the H I flux density were measured for the other 17. About 60 percent of
Cosmological N-body simulations of galaxy merging
We report here on a series of N-body experiments designed to simulate galaxy merging in a cosmological setting and test the hypothesis that bright elliptical galaxies are merger remnants. In the
The dynamical state of groups of galaxies
On presente une serie de simulations a N corps modelisant l'evolution de groupes de 5 a 10 galaxies a halos sombres massifs, avec un large eventail de conditions initiales. Les galaxies a halos
Properties of dense galaxy groups and the implications of their existence
Galaxy counts are reported within 1 deg of the 100 dense groups cataloged by Hickson (1982). The results suggest that a much smaller fraction of the groups can be explained as chance alignments than
Systematic properties of compact groups of galaxies.
One hundred compact groups of galaxies have been identified by a systematic search of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey red prints. Each group contains four or more galaxies within a 3 mag range,
Encounters of disk/halo galaxies
The first numerical models of interacting galaxies are presented in which all dynamical components of the participants are modeled as fully three-dimensional N-body systems with thousands of
