The shape of spikes elicited at a constant rate was compared with the changes of transmembrane currents obtained by repetitive activation of the somatic membrane (voltage clamp method). Repetitive stimulation at frequencies between 1 and 10 c sec−1 led to a rapid decrease in the falling rate of the spike and in its positive after-potential.
