Endosymbiotic bacteria are important drivers of insect evolutionary ecology, acting both as partners that contribute to host adaptation and as subtle parasites that manipulate host reproduction. Among them, the genus Arsenophonus is emerging as one of the most widespread lineages. Its biology is, however, entirely unknown in most cases, and it is therefore unclear how infections spread through insect populations. Here we examine the incidence and evolutionary history of Arsenophonus in aphid…
Diversity of bacteria associated with Hormaphidinae aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae)
TLDR
High‐throughput sequencing of bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicons displays a comprehensive picture of the microbiota in Hormaphidinae and may be helpful in understanding the symbiont diversity within a group of aphids.
A distinct strain of Arsenophonus symbiont decreases insecticide resistance in its insect host
TLDR
Two distinct Arsenophonus strains are reported in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, a major pest insect in Asian countries that causes significant economic damage through rice crop destruction and demonstrates how a symbiont-mediated phenotypic change can occur.
Microbiota associated with Mollitrichosiphum aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Greenideinae): diversity, host species specificity and phylosymbiosis
TLDR
A significant correlation between Mollitrichosiphum aphid phylogeny and microbial community composition is observed, providing evidence for a pattern of phylosymbiosis between natural aphid populations and their microbial associates.
Circulation of the Cultivable Symbiont Serratia symbiotica in Aphids Is Mediated by Plants
TLDR
It is demonstrated that cultivable S. symbiotica can be horizontally transferred from infected to uninfected aphids sharing the same plant, providing first direct evidence that plants can mediate horizontal transmission of certain strains of this symbiont species.
Insight into the bacterial communities of the subterranean aphid Anoecia corni
TLDR
The results suggest that, despite its subterranean lifestyle, A. corni shelter a bacterial diversity mainly limited to bacterial endosymbionts, which is in contrast to other aphid species.
Facultative endosymbionts mediate dietary breadth in a polyphagous herbivore
TLDR
The results unequivocally demonstrate that symbiont gain or loss can instantaneously and substantially change the topology of food plant use in a polyphagous insect, modifying diet in ways that potentially influence the insect's ecological niche, evolutionary trajectory and pest status.
Worldwide Populations of the Aphid Aphis craccivora Are Infected with Diverse Facultative Bacterial Symbionts
TLDR
Investigation of facultative symbiont species richness and prevalence among worldwide populations of the cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch finds that even when symbionts prevalence is relatively low, symbionT-associated phenotypic variation may allow population-level evolutionary responses to local selection.
Are ecological communities the seat of endosymbiont horizontal transfer and diversification? A case study with soil arthropod community
TLDR
The importance of extensive community‐wide studies for a better understanding of the spread of endosymbionts across global arthropod communities is highlighted.
Detection and characterization of bacterial endosymbionts in Southeast Asian tephritid fruit fly populations
TLDR
Investigation of the presence of Wolbachia, Spiroplasma, Arsenophonus and Cardinium among Bactrocera, Dacus and Zeugodacus flies of Southeast Asian populations indicated that in the Southeast natural populations examined, supergroup A WolbachIA strain infections were the most common, followed by Entomoplasmatales and Card inium.

Evidence of diversity and recombination in Arsenophonus symbionts of the Bemisia tabaci species complex
TLDR
A survey on Arsenophonus diversity in whitefly species (Hemiptera), in particular the Bemisia tabaci species complex, is proposed, revealing a diversity within the B. tabaci Species complex which resembles that reported on the larger scale of insect taxonomy.
Arsenophonus, an emerging clade of intracellular symbionts with a broad host distribution
TLDR
The sample of currently available molecular data presents the genus Arsenophonus as one of the richest and most widespread clusters of insect symbiotic bacteria and its phylogenetic lineages indicates a complex evolution and apparent ecological versatility with switches between entirely different life styles.
Independent Origins of Vectored Plant Pathogenic Bacteria from Arthropod-Associated Arsenophonus Endosymbionts
TLDR
Ancestral state reconstruction analysis indicated that the adaptation to a plant pathogenic lifestyle likely evolved from an arthropod-associated lifestyle and showed that within the genus Arsenophonus, the plant pathogen lifestyle arose independently at least twice.
Endosymbiont metacommunities, mtDNA diversity and the evolution of the Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) species complex
TLDR
The results demonstrate the rapid dynamics of the bacterial endosymbiont–host associations at a small evolutionary scale, questioning the role of endosysmbiotic communities in the evolution of the Bemisia tabaci species complex and strengthening the need to develop a metacommunity theory of inherited endosYmbionts.
Parasitoids as vectors of facultative bacterial endosymbionts in aphids
TLDR
It is demonstrated for the first time, to the knowledge, that parasitoids can indeed transfer H. defensa and R. insecticola by sequentially stabbing infected and uninfected individuals of their host, Aphis fabae, establishing new, heritable infections.
POPULATION GENETIC STRUCTURE AND SECONDARY SYMBIONTS IN HOST‐ASSOCIATED POPULATIONS OF THE PEA APHID COMPLEX
TLDR
The population structure and symbiont community of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), which feeds on a range of legume species and is known to form genetically differentiated host‐adapted populations, is studied.
Independent origins and horizontal transfer of bacterial symbionts of aphids
TLDR
To explore the dynamics of secondary symbiont associations in aphids, bacteria infecting 15 species of macrosiphine aphids were characterized using DNA sequencing, diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR), diagnostic restriction digests, phylogenetic analyses, and electron microscopy to examine aphids from nature and from laboratory colonies.
The host range of the male-killing symbiont Arsenophonus nasoniae in filth fly parasitioids.
Evolution and Diversity of Facultative Symbionts from the Aphid Subfamily Lachninae
TLDR
In a phylogenetic analysis of Serratia symbionts from 51 lachnid hosts, it is found that diversity in symbiont morphology, distribution, and function is due to multiple independent origins of symbiosis from ancestors belonging toSerratia and possibly also to evolution within distinct symbionT clades.
Side‐stepping secondary symbionts: widespread horizontal transfer across and beyond the Aphidoidea
TLDR
Findings on the prevalence of these symbionts within many aphid taxa, along with published observations concerning their effects on host fitness, imply a significant role of facultative symbiosis in aphid ecology and evolution.
